Almost all of the SBIR/STTR federally-funded research is aimed at developing one or more new products. Those products will need to be manufactured, first as prototypes, and then eventually as commercially viable products. Small manufacturing entities should seek out opportunities with entrepreneurs, colleges, universities, research centers, inventors and others involved in the SBIR and STTR programs to partner with them for project design and development.
In many cases, an SME will have a good idea for a new product or innovative technology that needs high-risk funding support. The SBIR and STTR programs are the world's largest source of such early stage research and proof-of-concept capital. Most new products actually come from industry. Thus knowing more about the SBIR/STTR programs can help your company grow.
