It's a Success! Albion Laboratories Partners with MEP Utah to Develop a Lean Manufacturing Initiative

And the Results Are In!
The Results of Their Lean Efforts

As a direct result of the MEP Lean manufacturing projects, Albion employees have already been able to achieve monumental success in their improvement efforts. Albion has;

- Reduced the company's lead time from an average of 2 weeks to same day shipping on the top 95% of their products;

- Improved their customers' service with orders being filled more accurately;

- Increased sales by 20%;

- Reduced labor expenditures for product out the door; and

- Improved the plant and the shipping areas so that they are cleaner and more organized.

Albion is also wrapping up a project to manufacture and certify their products to GMP standards, which can also be attributed to their Lean efforts.

Conquering the 5th S - How to Sustain Your 5S Implementation

The most important thing to realize when implementing 5S is that it is not something you achieve and then declare "Task Completed." It's an ongoing effort that not only needs to be sustained, but needs to be improved upon as time goes on.

This article will hopefully give you some supportive solutions to help encourage the sustaining efforts in your own business. If you follow the two guidelines presented and implement some of the suggested techniques, you may be one of the few companies to honestly be able to say your company is implementing 5S in the workplace and seeing success on a continual basis.

RFID: Lemons or Lemonade

By Rick Korchak
RFID Practice Area Coordinator

Manufacturing Extension Partnership

RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification, is rapidly becoming the buzzword of the 21st Century's first decade. Several very large organizations, including Wal-Mart, Target, the Department of Defense and others have already begun to implement RFID technology to identify and track items throughout their extended enterprise.

They are already starting to require the use of RFID by their suppliers, and these mandates will eventually affect every organization in the supply chain, right down to the smallest manufacturer, distributor, and retailer, which probably means YOU.

So what is RFID and what will it mean for your business?

What are the benefits I might see as a result?

Six Sigma for Beginners - Get Your Green Belt!

Green Belt training is 8 days, and Black Belt is an additional 9 days.

A Green Belt is equipped to solve some fairly nasty problems, and often works on a business process project, though many do work on engineering and production problems. The Black Belt gets additional training in Design of Experiments, which is very useful in engineering and production projects.

Training format is four days in class, a month working on the projects, another four days in class, and so on, with project coaching sessions between classes.

Six Sigma Overview Sessions:

If you would like to receive information on when these sessions will take place, please contact: Lee at (801) 244-2790.
