Why We Do It

Why does MEP strive to help
Utah Manufacturers?

Most small and medium size manufacturers lack the human and technical resources to adopt best practices or make improvements on their own. The MEP provides expertise in much the same way as agricultural extension agents do in the “ag industry”.

Private consulting firms tend to serve large companies because of simple economics. As a result, smaller companies are left to their own devices to develop strategies, access the latest technologies, and implement the newest management & manufacturing practices. Many remain status-quo, and eventually fail, overcome by competition and changing markets.

The MEP, as a contract partner with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), leverages State as well as Federal support, along with a network of Utah-based public and private resources to provide value-added consulting services to Utah manufacturers who need the expertise MEP offers.

Most manufacturers are categorized as “Small Businesses” because of their size. However, whether a local contractor working on federal programs, a furniture manufacturer or beekeeper, MEP recognizes Utah’s manufacturing industry as the center of Utah’s booming economy. MEP’s goal is to ensure that this industry sector is provided with all the resources and support needed to remain successful.

Recently, Utah State University completed an economic impact study for MEP Utah. The 2007 study evaluated the impact of 72 recent MEP projects, demonstrating that MEP Utah services have created or retained 2,543 jobs; more than $399 million of additional industrial output; more than $87 million of additional employee compensation; and more than $10.5 million of additional indirect business taxes.
